Responsibility & Qualification Summary For
On Call Residential Counselor (MUST be fluent in American Sign Language)

SUMMARY: The Residential Counselor is responsible for the safety, welfare, training and supervision of all individuals residing in their assigned work locations for their assigned shift.  The Counselor is a member of the treatment planning team, providing and supporting a structured, consistent and therapeutic environment.  Counselors are responsible for implementing individualized treatment programs for the time they are on duty.  In addition, they are responsible for intervening and resolving crisis situations as well as providing emergency CPR and First Aid if required.  Further, Counselors are expected to have, and maintain current and valid driver’s license. 
REPORTS TO:  Residential Supervisor or House Manager
The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position.  This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible to provide supervision and protective oversight of assigned individual throughout scheduled shift assignment to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Responsible to maintain ongoing knowledge and understanding of established levels of protective oversight and supervision requirements under the individual’s plan of care.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of daily activities to meet person-centered choices, and identified habilitation and educational needs.
  • Support and implement specific training activities and tasks to assigned individual based on the person-centered plan, habilitation plan, or education plan.
  • Implement behavioral interventions required by the person’s plans or presenting behaviors.
  • Complete required documentation and data collection associated with the implementation of activities, tasks, and interventions.
  • Prepare meals for individuals in accordance with established menus and protocols associated with the work location.
  • Complete required training and certification as a Certified Medication Technician (CMT) in MD and Trained Medication Employee (TME) in DC. Administer medication according to established protocols in DC and MD
  • Complete tasks required to ensure the home and living areas are maintained in a safe, clean and sanitary condition.
  • Implement and maintain protocols and procedures related to the protection of individuals, including Universal Precautions, First Aid, and CPR, and Incident Reporting and Management.
  • Complete all required Core Competency and DDS trainings. Obtain certification for Defensive Driving Course
  • Attend and participate in in-service and staff development meetings/trainings.
  • Participate in Pre-admission assessments as required by your supervisor.
  • Transport individuals to community locations for recreational, medical, and instructional activities.
  • Provide support and assistance to individuals relative to daily living skills and activities.
  • Provide support and assistance to individuals relative to leisure / recreational needs, activities and tasks.
  • Complete required clinical and administrative documentation required for the assigned shift and work location.
  • Initiates and maintains communication with supervisory and management staff relative to events occurring while on duty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) with one year experience working with children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities as a service provider or as a family member;
  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) with emphasis in Human Services with or without experience;
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in Psychology or related field with or without experience.
